Holiday cheer

Quick drive offers views of the best Christmas light displays

By Nick Gevock - 12/20/2008

http://www.mtstandard.com/articles/2008/12/21/videos/hjjbihiaidifhc.txt 'Tis the … No, I've been told never to start a story with that hackneyed phrase.

But we all know what time of year it is. And of course with the holidays comes Christmas lights.

Some people put out a strand in the front bushes or hanging off the front porch. Others place their tree in the front window for all to see.

Then there's the crowd that goes all out.

Santa and reindeer in the yard. Nativity scenes and candy canes. Elves and snowmen.

I've seen houses that could put Vegas to shame. I remember a few that gave pause as to whether they were visible from the Space Shuttle. Okay, not really, but there are some pretty massive displays out there.

I won't call it an obsession, but it's darn close.

Yet as the father of a 7-year-old daughter, I can't deny that one of my favorite things this time of year is reaching for the keys for an auto tour of the best Christmas light displays around town.

To all those people whose power bill soars this time of year to brighten the holidays for a few others, I just say thanks and God bless.

Here are a few of the best around Butte and the surrounding towns, as reported by Standard readers.

Happy viewing.
