Hikers and climbers often have to cope with water, dirt and snow that finds its way into the tight spaces of boots. The solution to limiting this problem often lies with a pair of gaiters, which can cover and protect the tops of footwear.

The right gaiters depend on the nature of the excursion you plan and the expected conditions.
Trail Gaiters: Lightweight and breathable, this type of gaiters offers protection against rocks, grit and light rain during mild-weather excursions.
Alpine Gaiters: Designed for all-around hiking, snowshoeing, mountaineering and cross-country skiing, and offer protection against rock abrasion and water.
Expedition Gaiters: Serves as a heavy-duty protector, and insulates for extended mountaineering trips in tough conditions. Most feature a waterproof, breathable fabric.
Women's Gaiters: Typically shorter in height, this type of gaiter offers more top girth to accommodate a woman's calf.
