Southern B romps at state volleyball

BOZEMAN — The Southern B was given four berths in this year's state Class B high school volleyball tournament under realignment instituted for the 2008-09 school year because the division has more teams than the other two.

All four proved to be good ones, too, in this volleyball season. The Southern B swept through the first round and set members Huntley Project and Townsend up for a winners' bracket semifinal-round clash in the state tournament being played on the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse court at Montana State University.

Huntley Project and Townsend placed third and fourth, respectively, at the Southern B Divisional tournament in Red Lodge last weekend, but they were first and second in last year's state tournament. This year's Southern B Divisional champion is Manhattan Christian, which Townsend upended Thursday night in the state tournament quarterfials. Colstrip, third at state last year, was the Southern B runner-up last weekend, then fell Thursday to Huntley Project in the state quarterfinals.

Huntley Project is the two-time defending state titlist.

Manhattan Christian 1

Jessica Sagissor scurried for 20 digs as Townsend, last year's state runner-up, toppled Southern B champion Manhattan Christian 16-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-19 in the quarterfinals.

Delaware Hansen pounded 14 kills for the Bulldogs, Gaelyn Domino set 43 assists, and Siobhan Flynn chalked up 13 kills, 18 digs and three blocks.

Hanna VanDyk put down 13 kills for Manhattan Christian, Sarah Nickisch came up with 22 digs and Alexis Bliese dished out 29 assists.

Alexis Bliese set all 28 of Manhattan Christian's assists in the 25-13, 25-16, 25-15 first-round sweep over Florence.

Ashlee Dyk recorded three ace serves and six blocks for the Eagles. Sarah Nickish had 11 digs.

Amanda Heffner came up with 16 digs to lead Florence.

Siobhan Flynn collected four ace serves, 10 kills, three blocks and 15 digs to beat Choteau 25-21, 25-14, 25-22 in the first round.

Becky Moudree's contributions to the win included nine kills and 12 digs. Gaelyn Domino chipped in with 26 assists and 10 digs. Delaware Hansen belted 10 kills.

Ashley Vandolah led Choteau with 14 kills, nine assists and four blocks.

Townsend def. Choteau 25-21, 25-14, 25-22.

Missoula Loyola 0

Defending champion Huntley Project was tested and challenged by the Loyola-Sacred Heart Breakers, but emerged from the first-round tussle with a 25-23, 25-17, 26-24 sweep.

Bethany Moullet mashed 17 kills, Teale Steffes doled out 39 assists and Erica Yurian scrambled for 20 digs in the Red Devils' victory.

Abby Mansch set 29 assists, and Bethany Dahlen drilled 14 kills for Loyola.

Trina West laced 14 kills and Charli Hartman came up with 18 digs for Colstrip.

Fairfield was led by Chelsea Baris with 17 kills and nine blocks.
