Remember to hydrate during cold weather hiking

By Chuck Myers - 11/12/2008

You can lose fluids just as fast during a winter hike or camping trip as you do engaged in the same activity during the warm weather months. Even if you don't feel thirsty during a hike you should stay hydrated. Here are tips for packing fluids and keeping hydrated on a winter hike:

  • Boil water and fill a container with it before setting out on hike. Find a way to insulate the bottle, such as by placing it inside a wool sock. Carry the bottle upside down to prevent freezing at the top.

  • Consider carrying a thermos filled with a hot drink. Hot fluid can feel particularly comforting with a stiff chill in the air.

  • Drink fluids even when you don't feel thirsty. A dehydrated hiker can suffer chills faster.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol and caffeinated beverages, which can contribute to dehydration.
