Dog population grows to 158 at ‘Camp Husky'
The 100 dogs rescued from a trailer and bus last month has grown to 158 with the birth of puppies.
Phyllis Ruana, the county's animal services director, who with others attended Phillip Brode's court hearing Thursday, told The Montana Standard the dogs continue to be housed at the Anselmo Mine hoist house at Excelsior and Caledonia.
Ruana said the health of the dogs has improved since they were taken in Oct. 5.
However, she added that she would like to find another shelter before winter sets in.
"We would like to move as soon as possible, it's freezing in there," Ruana said.
She said they are looking for a sheltered location that can house the dogs, and has running water, lights and electrical outlets.
Also, volunteers are still needed to help care for the dogs at "Camp Husky," as animal services refer to the temporary shelter.
