Sweeney wins in Anaconda ANACONDA — Mark Sweeney edged out Gene Vuckovich with a 658-602 vote Tuesday for a seat on the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Commission in District 1, unofficial tallies show.

In District 2, Rose Nyman handily beat Frank Knadler 554-307.

All three proposed levies — for the library, senior recreation and senior transportation — passed.

In the Senate District 43 race, Jesse Laslovich, a Democrat, received 4,083 votes to beat Dick Motta, a Republican, who garnered 822 votes in that county.

In the House District 85 race, Cynthia Hiner, Democrat, received 1,045 votes to Republican BJ Schubert's 556 votes.

Three races for offices in Anaconda-Deer Lodge County were uncontested.

John Sullivan will keep his post as chief of police, Joan Borneman will keep her seat as county attorney, and Neil Warner will be the new commissioner in District 3.

Granite OKs hospital district PHILIPSBURG — In Granite County, voters on Tuesday agreed to the creation of a hospital district with 1,275 voting yes, and 371 saying no.

In other results, Jesse Laslovich, a Democrat, received 852 votes to Republican opponent Dick Motta's 757 votes for state Senate District 43.

In the race for Public Service Commission in District 4, Doug Mood, a Republican, received 1,064 votes to Democrat Gail Gutsche's 561. However, for the overall district which covers Western Montana, early results show Gutsche winning 41,081 to 39,052.

Presidential candidate John McCain garnered 1,013 votes — 12 more than the 1,001 cast for Barack Obama. Gov. Brian Schweitzer received 1,026 votes to Roy Brown's 685 votes.

Powell gives nod to McCain DEER LODGE — Powell County voters gave John McCain 1,664 votes compared to 1,010 votes for Barack Obama in Tuesday's presidential election.

Initial figures indicate voter turnout was 76 percent.

In other races, Cynthia Hiner, a Democrat, received 947 votes to B.J. Schubert's 700 votes for the House District 85 seat.

Gov. Brian Schweitzer received 1,697 votes to Roy Brown's 1,023 votes.

Brad Johnson pulled 1,530 votes while Linda McCulloch received 1,116 for secretary of state.

Powell County voters also gave attorney general candidate Tim Fox 1,510 votes to Steve Bullock's 1,187 votes.

Incumbents Schulz, Ross win Madison races A pair of incumbents — David Schulz and Marilynn Ross — won re-election Tuesday to the Madison County Commission.

Schulz faced a challenge from Roger Staley, a county maintenance supervisor. Schulz came out on top 779-573 for the four-year term.

Ross was in a four-way race with Ron Nye, Bill Hanley and write-in candidate Richard Regier to finish the final two years of the seat she was appointed to last year.

As of press time, Ross had received 627 votes, while Nye came in second with 419 votes. Hanley had received 173 votes and Regier had 11 votes.
