Whitehall library plans discussion
WHITEHALL — A discussion and display are planned at the Whitehall Community Library relative to Kirby Larson's book, "Hattie Big Sky." The Whitehall book group meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, to talk about the book.
On Saturday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m., the library will have a display of clothing and household items from the time period of the book. All events are free.
Local musician Donna Weldon will play a selection of music from that era. Homestead food will be served.
One Book Montana, a program from Humanities Montana founded in 2003, annually invites all Montanans to read and discuss the same book. This year's selection is "Hattie Big Sky." Humanities Montana has loaned 30 copies of the book to the Whitehall Community Library for the community to read.
In a review by Booklist, the book is describes as an "engaging historical novel set in 1918, 16-year-old orphan Hattie Brooks leaves Iowa and travels to a Montana homestead inherited from her uncle. In the beautiful but harsh setting, she has less than a year to fence and cultivate the land in order to keep it."
