Sheriff Walsh is the candidate with zero tolerance for meth

Letter to the Editor

By The Montana Standard Staff - 10/15/2008

I've worked narcotics for the Butte Police Department for the past five years, and I can assure you that our department has no tolerance for methamphetamine. Members of this department have placed dozens of people in jail for meth possession — possession with intent to sell as well as sales itself. How much more zero tolerant for meth can you get than by placing people in jail?

The fact that Sheriff John Walsh has allowed, supported and encouraged us to do our jobs and make these arrests should tell everyone that Walsh has zero tolerance for meth.

Ben Thielen, on the other hand, has made his living over the past 12 years as a bail bondsman. He has released most all of the meth-related arrests that we have made. I know it's his job. I know that everyone has a right to fair bail. I know that everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

I also know of one particular person whom we have arrested in excess of 13 times since 2001. This person has been bonded out 11 times by Thielen. This person has been arrested for meth possession several times. This person is able to come up with bond on every occasion; however he works in a seasonal profession. This person is currently in jail and stays there only because Judge Steve Kambich is making him serve his sentence.

Zero tolerance for meth — one candidate can claim that to be true. His name is John Walsh.
