Letter: Save Hail Mary passes for football games

By Gere Hafer Speer - 10/08/2008

The vice president is, as they say, one heartbeat from the presidency. In Sarah Palin's case, it is a half a heartbeat, given John McCain's age and health history.

Recently two letters were published containing glowing endorsements of Palin; the writers seem to have found a new best friend.

The point neither of the writers addressed was if Palin has the qualifications to be a vice president. That is the issue. To have any other discussion of Palin is to fall into the whirlpool of worthless factoids put out by the McCain campaign.

McCain's VP pick is flawed at best; at worst it is a dangerous gimmick used to resuscitate a floundering race for the presidency. Palin's nomination is a Hail Mary pass designed to bring in the evangelicals and the disaffected Hillary voters and cause a furor that will draw the voters' attention from the national and life-altering decisions that hang in the balance of this election.

Most preposterous of all, the campaign would have us think that McCain considers women capable of holding the second-highest office in the land. In reality, McCain has treated Palin with utter disrespect. A legitimate candidate would have been strenuously vetted by the McCain campaign. Palin was not. In Palin's case the media and pundits have done the McCain campaign's job. The result is a continuous reveal of shortcomings, foibles and possible law breaking.

McCain, to his discredit, has thrust this utterly unprepared, untested, unqualified woman into the national spotlight. If she were a thoughtful, clear-thinking, rational person with a shred of common sense and humility, she would have immediately dismissed even the suggestion of her candidacy.

Hail Mary passes are great for football games where people's lives and nation's futures aren't at stake. If you do the vetting that the McCain campaign should have done on Palin, you will come to realize that while she may have some admirable traits, she is not qualified or capable of holding the second-highest public office of the Unites States of America.
