Mining City’s ‘Stevie’ in ICU after being hit by vehicle on Harrison
By John Grant Emeigh - 08/15/2008
Butte’s famed shoe-shine man was being treated in the intensive care unit at St. James Healthcare on Thursday after being struck by a vehicle earlier in the day.
A nurse listed Stevie Faulkner in stable condition as of 9:30 p.m.
Faulkner, 59, was struck by a vehicle while walking in the 3800 block of Harrison Avenue just before 5 p.m., Butte dispatch confirmed Thursday.
Early dispatch reports indicated Faulkner was conscious and breathing after being hit, and suffered “road rash.” Specifics about the incident weren’t available Thursday.
Faulkner, a longtime Butte character, is known for walking across town almost every day and giving inexpensive shoe shines from a battered, wooden box.
Faulkner was hit by a car also in March 2006. He told the driver then that he was all right after being struck and the motorist left the scene, according to reports. Friends took Faulkner to the hospital later that day after noticing cuts and scrapes on him, and he was treated and released.
