Nonprofit groups slated to receive settlement money
By The Standard Staff - 07/17/2008
Butte and area nonprofit groups recently benefited from leftover settlement money from a loan damages lawsuit.
An estimated $300,000 will be distributed, according to records filed recently in Butte district court.
In 2003, Angelina Costello and Dolores Garcia sued Beneficial Montana and Beneficial Mortgage Co. claiming they were harmed by their loan practices. The company settled the lawsuit with the plaintiffs in 2006 for about $25 million.
Under the settlement agreement, the parties decided that any leftover money from that settlement would go to certain nonprofits. The court determined that $300,000 was available.
The leftover money will be dispersed this way:
Butte Legion Oasis Neighborhood Network Center, $100,000.
National Affordable Housing Network of Butte, $100,000.
Montana Shares — Rural Employment Opportunities, $50,000.
Cascade County Law Clinic of Great Falls, $25,000.
Helena Education Foundation, $25,000.
