Letter:Change scares some folks
By Zena Beth McGlashan - 07/08/2008
Butte-Silver Bow’s entry, “Rock Around the Clock,” was cute. First National Bank’s jungle lion choo-choo was adorable. Summit Beverage’s “Fun in the Sun” was just that, fun! But, by golly, John Eyde’s letter on Tuesday hit the nail on the head.
Only the Republicans, God bless ’em, had an entry directly addressing the theme of this year’s Fourth of July parade. A huge sign read, “Republicans Support Small Business.” Boring, but right on. Those darn Democrats only festooned convertibles with signs and balloons, the pikers!
Although his letter began with his expression of Republican idealism, calling the tall, skinny, good-looking, smart black kid from Illinois “Hussein Obama” revealed Eyde’s true intent. He was writing about his own fear and loathing.
Some might call him a racist. I don’t. I pity Eyde because he’s seriously frightened. He’s comfortable with leaders named George and Dick, “real American” names. You’ve got to know that folks like Eyde can’t handle — what? Cultural diversity? Inclusion? America as a land of possibility for all, even for guys and gals with “weird” names? I’d say all of the above.
People like Eyde are so fearful that their emotions have segued into hatred. You can’t help feeling sorry for the guy because this nation is headed for a sea change and it scares the bejeezuz out of people like Eyde.
When Sen. Barack Hussein Obama becomes president in January, Eyde and his cohorts better have on their life preservers. The sea change will begin.
Thank heavens.
