Not all feminists support Hillary for president
Letter to the Editor
By The Standard Staff - 05/29/2008
I have to weigh in on some of the banter about feminists marching in lock step for Clinton. I'm a feminist. I believe in equality for all, not just women. Do the pundits really think feminists won’t vote against their gender? I proudly support Barack Obama.
We need a leader who isn’t beholden to special interests, who votes his conscience, who isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right and moral.
Clinton argues Obama has out spent her in every primary. Yes, that’s true. That’s because a whole lot of citizens support him. Let’s not forget that Obama has been running against Hillary, former U.S. President Bill Clinton and their daughter and still is the frontrunner.
She says he will lose poor working-class American votes. Historically speaking, those votes rarely go to a Democrat. What about the fact that she is unpopular with college-educated Americans? What about her inabil-ity to attract a strong multi-cultural base? What about the fact that she has incredibly low approval ratings? Barack Obama is the most exciting leader to come along in decades, and as Democrats we’d be foolish to let this historic opportunity slip away.
Obama is not elitist. He grew up poor and was raised by his mother and grandmother. He understands the working class and he despises corruption in Washington. He has shown good judgment on critical issues; he has run a clean race; he knows how to diffuse his Republican attackers. He has my vote. I hope he has yours, too.
