Horizon Air announced Tuesday it is cancelling all service to Butte.
The airline, which is part of Alaska Air, will stop its two daily flights to Seattle after Aug. 24.
“It’s with great regret that we leave Butte,” Jeff Pinneo, Horizon’s president and chief executive officer said in a press release. “This was not an easy decision, and it was arrived at only after a great deal of thought and a thorough analysis of possible alternatives.” Dan Russo, Horizon’s director of marketing and communications, said record-high fuel prices are to blame.
“Our route from Butte has not been profitable for us, and certainly high fuel prices have not helped that matter,” he said. “We’re taking all the self-help we can to make adjustments to our flight schedule. Every flight needs to be as profitable as possible.” The cut leaves Bert Mooney Airport with just two daily flights on SkyWest Airlines to Salt Lake City.
Airport manager Rick Griffith estimated about 1,000 people flew on Horizon each month, or about 15 people per flight.
All nine Horizon employees in Butte are being given the opportunity to apply for openings elsewhere in Horizon’s route system. The airline has served Butte for 19 years.
Megan Lawrence, Horizon managing director for government and community relations, sent an e-mail to local officials Tuesday telling them about the cancellation.
“Unfortunately, after a thorough analysis of possible alternatives, we have concluded that there is no workable service option for Butte,” she wrote. “It is with great regret that we will discontinue service to Butte.” Jim Smitham, executive director of the Butte Local Development Co., called the cut a “severe blow.” “This hurts our efforts both for the businesses here and those we are trying to attract,” he said. “It really limits our travel possibilities.” Jeff Ruffner, president of MSE Technology Applications Inc., said his employees fly weekly and any change in service makes travel more expensive and cumbersome.
“If you’re coming from the East Coast, it’s a full day, so travel isn’t easy,” he said. “Anything that limits flights is going to make it more difficult and expensive.” Ruffner said MSE spent $428,000 last fiscal year and $203,000 so far this year on employee plane travel, with a majority of trips in and out of Butte.
Griffith, who was driving to Butte from Seattle Tuesday, said he didn’t know the cut was coming.
“It’s not like anybody gave us any kind of warning,” he said.
Marko Lucich, executive director of the Butte-Silver Bow Chamber of Commerce, said a recently formed Chamber Transportation Committee is holding a scheduled meeting Wednesday that will focus on the cut.
“With the news of the departure of Horizon Air from Butte, we must work more diligently than ever before to increase service to our community,” he said.
Griffith hopes for quick results from the committee meeting.
“I’m recommending we try to go (visit Horizon at their Seattle headquarters) immediately, visit them and see if there’s a way we can maybe, somehow bridge the gaps, get them some money to operate for a short period of time here.” Horizon Air is offering a full refund to anyone who holds tickets for after August 24. To get a refund, contact Horizon at (800) 547-9308 or return the ticket to where it was purchased.
The cut is part of a large change in service by Horizon. In Montana, the airline is also discontinuing its once-daily nonstop service between Billings and Portland and adding a once-daily nonstop flight from Billings to Helena.
Horizon serves 48 cities throughout California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Baja California Sur (Mexico), and British Columbia and Alberta (Canada). Together, Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines serve 92 cities and are subsidiaries of Alaska Air Group Inc.
