What’s for lunch?

A common loon with a crayfish in its bill makes its way along the shore by the Black Sandy Campground on Hauser Lake, near Helena, over the weekend. It eventually consumed the crustacean for lunch. According to the Cornell Lab for Ornithology, the common loon swims underwater to catch fish, propelling itself with its feet. The loon has sharp, rearward-pointing projections on the roof of its mouth and tongue that help keep a firm hold on slippery fish — and crayfish.
