Shrader, Dennehy race to All-State
Shannon Young wins Class C title for Harrison

HELENA — A pair of Butte High runners earned All-State honors Saturday at the Montana High School Association state cross country meet.
Freshman Ethan Shrader ran to 10th place in the boys race, completing the 3-mile course in 16 minutes, 22 seconds.
Bozeman’s Alex Brekke won the state title with an impressive time of 15:58.
The top 15 runners are All-State.
“We had a good day,” Butte High boys’ coach Liza Dennehy said. “Any time you have a someone make All-State as a freshman, it’s pretty special.” Dennehy’s daughter, Keli Dennehy, ran to All-State accolades as a freshman. She did it again Saturday.
Dennehy, capped a sensational sophomore season by placing 14th with a time of 19:25.
Though her time and place — Dennehy placed eighth last year — weren’t as good as in 2006, Butte High girls’ coach Laurie Rossberg said her star “ran her heart out.” Bozeman freshman Heidi Turner won the girls’ AA title with an impressive time of 17:47.
The Missoula Hellgate boys and Bozeman girls ran to team titles.
The Butte High boys placed 13th, while the Bulldog girls took 12th.
Junior Summer Sullivan and seniors Sky Miner and Brittnee Sayler also put up good times for the Butte High girls.
Sullivan placed 39th at 20:45, while Miner took 53rd at 21:14 and Sayler ran to 73rd at 21:56.
“They gave everything they had,” Rossberg said of her team. “I’m proud of all of them.” Senior Chad Penn and Juniors Kaleob Palmer and Derrick Krueger also broke 19 minutes for the Butte High boys.
Palmer placed 79th at 18:32, less than a second faster than See RACE, Page B4 Kruger, whose time was also listed at 18:32.
Penn placed 89th at 18:59.
In the Class A competitions, the Dillon boys’ and girls’ teams placed seventh. Anaconda’s teams both took 18th.
Dillon senior Logun Norris placed fourth at 16:21 to lead the Dillon boys.
Patrick Casey of Laurel won the state title at 15:38.
Also for Dillon, Jonathan Ries (17:51) placed 28th, Jay Zimdars (18:03) took 36th and Geno Lewendowski (18:17) placed 43rd.
Senior Buck Eubanks led Anaconda with a time of 19:47, while sophomore Bryan Harbart paced Butte Central at 19:50.
Whitefish sophomore Loni Hanson won the Class A girls title with a time of 19:28.
Dillon’s Ali Pelletier (21:01) and Cindy Atchley (21:02) placed 33rd and 35th to lead the Beavers.
Senior Kaitlyn Van Mee’s led the Copperheads with a time of 21:30.
Junior Brooke Pokorny led Butte Central at 21:52.
In Class B, the Thompson Falls boys and Glasgow girls ran to titles.
Darby’s Paul Abrahamsen won the boys’ race in 16:34.
Manhattan senior Tyson Vanderby (17:01) placed eighth, while teammate Ryan Blomback (17:25) took 16th.
Other area runners in the top 25 were Boulder’s John Towle (17:23), Deer Lodge’s Daniel Lombardi (17:28) and Whitehall’s Cody Woolpert (17:34).
Red Lodge senior Cortney Lynde ran the girls’ race in 19:27.
Boulder’s Brittany Jonson placed sixth at (19:51), while teammate Whitney Giulio took 10th at (20:07).
Other area runners in the top 25 were Manhattan’s Lizzy Thompson (20:32) and Manhattan Christian’s Becca Vandam (20:52).
Whitehall’s Cassidy Wendell ran to 26th place in 21:14.
In Class C, the Winnett boys and Belt/Centerville girls took home the team titles.
Led by Gavin and Gage Owens, the Ennis boys’ team placed fourth.
Gavin Owens, a sophomore, placed sixth at 17:52, while Gage Owens, a junior, placed seventh at 17:57.
Also for Ennis, Brian Nestegard (19:02) placed 27th and Sage Petersen (20:33) placed 51st.
Joliet’s Ryan Ketterling won the race in 16:09.
Harrison’s Theron Hamilton ran to 14th at 18:16, while Philipsburg’s Kal Munis placed 17th at 18:32.
On the girls’ side, Harrison’s Shannon Young, a freshman, claimed the state title in 20:00.
Drummond’s Jessica Paske placed eighth at 21:46, while Harrison’s Sage Gustafson ran to 17th in 23:06.
Also, Philipsburg Elly Hogue (23:19) placed 20th, Drummond’s Megan Oberweiser (23:28) took 24th and Harrison’s Kaysha Young (23:45) took 29th.
