Female grizzly killed in Yellowstone clash
By The Associated Press - 09/28/2007
BILLINGS — A female grizzly bear was killed in a clash apparently with another grizzly in Yellowstone National Park’s Lamar Valley earlier this week.
It’s not unusual for one grizzly to kill another but it’s rare for it to happen in such a well-traveled area.
“I don’t think it happens very often,’’ said Stacy Vallie, a Yellowstone spokeswoman.
The fight apparently happened sometime before dawn Tuesday not far from the road that passes through Lamar Valley, park officials said Thursday. No one saw the incident but park officials assumed the 250-pound female was killed by another grizzly. She didn’t appear to have any cubs.
The bear’s head and claws were removed to keep them from being taken by trophy-seeking visitors. The rest of the carcass was left in the valley where it was being eaten by scavengers.
