Butte Tarpons start long- course season

Lew Yong Gerbrandt ranked 11th in the country; Ethan Shrader top point-getter for local club The Butte Tarpons opened the Long-Course swim season with a strong showing at the Bozeman May Classic, May 18-20.

Lew Yong Gerbrandt announced her graduation up to the 13-14 age group by breaking two Montana State records. Having just turned 13 in February, she smoked the field with a blistering record 30.95 in the 50-meter Butterfly. Then, taking on state record holders Ashley Crowe (age 15, Billings) and Hannah Halstrom (age 17, Bozeman), Gerbrandt led from start to finish to record a new 13-14 Montana mark of 2:30.59 for the 200-meter butterfly. This time currently ranks her 11th in the U.S. for the event.

Tarpon Ethan Shrader (age 15) was the top point-getter for the Butte club. He ripped through the 15-16 age group competition to win all seven of his events.

In one of the most exciting races of the meet, Shrader led the 200 backstroke for the whole race against 17-year-old state record holder Major Robinson, only to be out-touched at the final wall.

Competing in the 9-10 age group, nine-year-old Dalton Sessions placed well, finishing first in the 50 backstroke with second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 50 breaststroke, and 100 breaststroke.

Competing only on Saturday, the swimming Salisbury family made valuable contributions to the team scoring. Hannah, 10, placed second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 400 freestyle. Older brother Ian placed second in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 57.61.

The Tarpons were well represented in the girls’ 11-12 age group by sisters Adria and Airika Bentley and teammate Kayla Sessions. Adria improved her 200 individual medley time by nine seconds, while Airika dropped four seconds from her 100 butterfly best time. Sessions lowered her 100 freestyle by 9.63 seconds.

The 13-14 Girls’ Tarpon contingent included Kayla Hoar, Lydia Huckeby, Mikayla Lewis, Melodi Reisenauer, and Gerbrandt. Huckeby turned in an excellent performance, dropping time in six out of seven events and placing second in the 50 breaststroke. Hoar placed fourth in the 50 butterfly with a time of 35.43.

Rachel Huckeby, swimming in the 15-16 age group, placed third in the 50 breaststroke. Matt Matich rounded out the Tarpon scoring by dropping four seconds in his 50 breaststroke to place first in that event.

The Butte Tarpons Swim Team is coached by former Rutgers record holder Pete Loftus, and is open to swimmers of all ages and abilities.
