Western hands defend title

DILLON — The University of Montana-Western men’s rodeo team successfully defended its Big Sky Regional title by winning the final two rodeos of the spring season.

Both rodeos were held in Missoula with the University of Montana serving as host.

The Montana-Western women finished second in the second rodeo and finished second in the region.

Both teams qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR), June 10-16, in Casper, Wyo.

The Western men set a new school scoring record with 1,060 points to win the first rodeo. The Bulldogs won the second rodeo 830 to 555 over Montana State.

Four Bulldogs claimed individual regional championships. James Irish of Lewistown, captured the saddle bronc title. Colter Davis of Helena, won the bareback title, Taylor Nahrgang of Buckeye, Ariz., won the steer wrestling title and Sam Levine of Wolf Creek, won the team roping, heeler title.

Also qualifying for the CNFR: Mack Erickson of Malta, Idaho, in bareback and bull riding; Alex Watson of Geyser, in team roping; J.R. Lund of Lewistown, in team roping and Kyle VanBeizen in calf roping.

For the Western women, Kayla Rae Hutchinson of Hulette, Wyo,. was the breakaway roping reserve champion to qualify for the CNFR. Also earning a trip to Casper in breakaway roping were Coree Shiner of Leadore, Idaho, and Amy Walker of King Hill, Idaho.

Shaylee French of Pincher Creek, Alberta, was the reserve champion in goat tying to qualify for the CNFR.
